MEET OUR ARTISTS

Anton Gericke

Anton Gericke

Anton Gericke was born in Johannesburg in 1947. His parents were involved in the hotel trade, and Anton fondly remembers using these settings to sketch and paint the people he would come across in these hotels.

Anton Gericke art features colourful landscapes, lively café’s, and music scenes and thoughtful, fun portraits. He is often asked to paint scenes from weddings and parties to add that extra special touch to the occasion. Artists that have inspired him includes Errol Boyley, Wessel Marais, Dale Elliot and Pieter Millard.

Both of Anton’s daughters, Murentia Moffatt and Carla Bosch, are also talented artists, and were taught by their father to observe God’s hand in His creation and to reflect His glory in their paintings. He currently resides in Brooklyn, Pretoria, with his wife Ronel.

Lydia van Staden

Lydia van Staden was born in 1970 in Pretoria. She is a mother of two and her husband works in construction which gives them ample opportunity to travel and meet amazing people. From a young age Lydia had a desire to paint, but it was only upon moving to Polokwane that she met an amazing artist named Elsabe Moolman who helped her unlock her talent.

In 2014 she was part of an art exhibition with Frank van der Merwe, a very talented photographer. After almost 10 years in Polokwane, Lydia’s family moved to Middelburg in Mpumalanga. There she entered an art competition and won and she was given an incredible opportunity, along with 6 other artists, to do a wall mural in the Middelburg Mall.

Lydia is inspired by photographs and sometimes when a certain picture talks to her, she cannot help but put it on canvas. After two and a half years in Middelburg, Lydia moved to Kuruman, where her family currently stays and where she enjoys giving painting classes and sharing her talents with others. Lydia feels called to helping others unlock their hidden talents.

Magda van der Merwe

https://artvistasa.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/magda.jpg

Magda van der Merwe was born in Cape Town in 1954 and grew up in Pietermaritzburg in kwaZulu-Natal and currently resides in Amanzimtoti with her husband Coenraad.

Artists that have inspired her include Amadeo Modigliani, Irma Stern, Hennie Nieman, and Father Claerhout.

Magda enjoys working with different media, such as acrylics, oil, and charcoal. The artist’s love of strong colour is reflected in her abstracts, colourful landscapes, and whimsical portraits.

Sue Eksteen

Sue Eksteen is a mother of four, a son, daughter-in-law, daughter and son-in-law; and two delightful granddaughters aged 11 months and 4 years.

She has been painting and drawing since early childhood and loves art and being able to use her God-given talent and making people happy with the results. She has also published three books and a number of short stories. She paints mainly water-colour and oils, but sometimes does acrylic, depending on the subject matter. She enjoys various genres but loves architecture, fisherman’s cottages, people and nature. She enjoys mixing colours and creating effects not found in tubes. Her paintings are signed S. Eksteen; Eucharisteo. This is the Greek word for gratitude and giving thanks.

Elize Venter

https://artvistasa.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/elize_venter.png

Elize Venter is a Pretoria based artist. She loves to observe how shape and light creates a mood in a painting, and strives to capture this in her work. Elize attended Salomi Prinsloo Art School in Pretoria, where she worked mainly with charcoal on paper. Thereafter she furthered her portrait studies at Willie Jacobs Portraits.

At age 60, Elize retired after spending most of her life in the sales and marketing world, and travelling overseas. She is happily married to her husband Kobus, and she has a son and daughter, and two beautiful grandchildren.

Scott Kotze

Scott Kotzé is a part time artist (for his day job he is the finance officer and operations manager at a Community Development NGO) living in Amanzimtoti. Although Scott has always been creative, he only seriously started focusing on painting after participating in the Everyonecounts art initiative in 2011 and joining Maggie Strachan’s art studio in Durban. He works mainly in oils and his subjects are mostly people and animals, sometimes using Shweshwe as a background. Combining these subjects with the patterned textiles gives a unique African feel to his paintings.

Scott held his first solo exhibition in 2012 at a venue in the township where he works. The guest list included all his models, most of whom have never been to an art exhibition. Scott continues to draw inspiration from nature and the people around him.
